In Ficciones, Jorge Luis Borges explores the theme of memory, highlighting its ambivalent nature: it can be both the foundation of identity and a limit to personal growth. The mind, as the keeper of memories, may become a prison when the past hinders action. The story Funes el memorioso vividly expresses this tension. After an accident, Ireneo Funes gains absolute memory, which prevents him from forgetting or abstracting. Far from being a gift, this ability isolates him and paralyzes his thinking. This thesis analyzes the role of memory in Funes el memorioso, focusing on the duality between enhancement and limitation. It also considers how Borges’s personal experience shapes his vision of memory as a central yet problematic element of human identity.

Abstract
It also considers how Borges’s personal experience shapes his vision of memory as a central yet problematic element of human identity.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
