This dissertation investigates the linguistic and discursive features of the Pilates® and Gyrotonic® manuals, with a focus on terminological definitions, recurring phraseological patterns, and semantic fields. Five topics were investigated: the rhetorical structure of definitions, their classification, the most frequent phrases, the conceptual domains, and the similarities and differences between the two texts. The analyses were conducted using a corpus-based and corpus-driven approach, employing digital tools from SketchEngine and AntConc to identify recurring phraseological patterns (4-grams), the most frequent words, and keywords. Additionally, the definitions in the Pilates® manual were examined. The results indicate that the definitions predominantly consist of single rather than multiple textual units, expressed more frequently as phrases than as complete sentences. Lexical analysis shows that the content of both manuals primarily relates to the semantic domains of body parts, movements, and positions. However, the Pilates® manual emphasizes evaluative language, whereas the Gyrotonic® manual focuses more on equipment, exercises, and the sequencing of activities. Furthermore, the Pilates® manual predominantly uses action verbs in the imperative form, while the Gyrotonic® manual more frequently employs copulative/stative verbs for descriptive purposes.
La presente tesi analizza le caratteristiche linguistiche e discorsive dei manuali di Pilates® e di Gyrotonic®, con particolare attenzione alle definizioni terminologiche, alle fraseologie ricorrenti e ai campi semantici. Sono stati affrontati cinque argomenti: la struttura retorica delle definizioni, la loro classificazione, i sintagmi più frequenti, i domini concettuali, e le somiglianze e differenze tra i due testi. Le analisi sono state condotte con un approccio corpus-based e corpus-driven, impiegando gli strumenti digitali di SketchEngine e AntConc per identificare sintagmi ricorrenti (4-grams), parole frequenti e parole chiave; in parallelo, sono anche state esaminate le definizioni del manuale di Pilates®. I risultati indicano che le definizioni presentano prevalentemente unità testuali singole anziché multiple, espresse più spesso sotto forma di sintagmi che di frasi complete. L’analisi lessicale evidenzia che il contenuto di entrambi i manuali è principalmente relativo agli ambiti semantici delle parti del corpo, dei movimenti e delle posizioni. Tuttavia, il manuale di Pilates® enfatizza il linguaggio valutativo, mentre quello di Gyrotonic® si concentra maggiormente sugli attrezzi, sugli esercizi e sulle sequenze delle attività da svolgere. Inoltre, il manuale di Pilates® si caratterizza per l’uso di verbi d’azione alla forma imperativa, mentre quello di Gyrotonic® si distingue per un uso più frequente di verbi copulativi/stativi che introducono descrizioni.
