Soil management and compaction in viticulture remain relatively under-investigated topics and still receive limited attention. However, understanding the soil compaction status is fundamental for managing both soil fertility and water availability. In this study, soil compaction was assessed under different soil management conditions and across vineyards of different planting ages in four farms adopting different inter-row management practices. Among these farms, three regularly carried out soil decompaction, while one did not. To evaluate compaction, penetration resistance (MPa), the slope of the plateau of the penetrometric curve, and the Compact Index (C.I.) were measured. In addition, the physical soil properties of the four farms were analysed, including texture, bulk density (BD), volumetric water content (VWC), and organic matter (OM). The study revealed differences in penetration resistance between compacted and non-compacted soils. The most significant findings emerged from the comparison between farm C, which performs decompaction, and farm D, which does not, particularly regarding bulk density and soil organic matter content, as well as the penetrometric curves. In these curves, soil behaviour showed opposite patterns depending on the vineyard planting year. These results may contribute to improving vineyard management from both a sustainability and productivity perspective.
La gestione del suolo e del suo compattamento in viticoltura è un argomento poco analizzato e a cui si dedica ancora poca importanza. Tuttavia, conoscere la condizione di compattamento del suolo è di fondamentale importanza per gestirne la fertilità e la disponibilità idrica. In questo studio si è rilevato il compattamento in diverse condizioni di gestione del suolo e per diversi anni di impianto in quattro aziende che hanno metodi diversi di gestione dell’interfila. Di queste aziende, tre decompattano regolarmente il suolo e una no. Per studiare il compattamento sono stati valutati la resistenza alla penetrazione (MPa), la pendenza del plateau della curva pentrometrica e il compact index (C.I.). Sono inoltre state analizzate le caratteristiche fisiche dei suoli delle quattro aziende quali la tessitura, la densità apparente (BD), la percentuale di umidità presente nel suolo (VWC) e la percentuale di sostanza organica (OM). Lo studio ha evidenziato la presenza di differenze di resistenza alla penetrazione tra suoli non compattati e compattati. I risultati più significativi sono stati i confronti tra l’azienda C che decompatta e l’azienda D che non decompatta fra la densità apparente e il contenuto di sostanza organica presente nel suolo, oltre alle curve penetrometriche. In esse, il suolo si comporta in modo opposto in base all’anno di impianto del vigneto. I risultati possono concorrere al miglioramento della gestione del vigneto in un’ottica di sostenibilità e produttività.
