This thesis explores the podcast as a contemporary communication medium, focusing on its linguistic features, listening practices, and socio-cultural impact. Framing the podcast as the heir to radio within the digital media ecosystem, the study investigates both elements of continuity and rupture between traditional broadcast media and on-demand audio formats. Particular attention is devoted to the role of voice, storytelling, and intimacy in shaping the relationship between speakers and listeners, as well as to the transformation of audience participation in the digital age. The first part of the thesis offers a theoretical and historical overview of podcasting, examining its origins, technical characteristics, and its evolution in relation to other mass media, such as radio, television, and digital platforms. Different podcast formats narrative, interview-based, free talk, educational, opinion, and catch-up—are analyzed to highlight their communicative structures and expressive strategies. The second part presents an empirical study based on a questionnaire administered to a sample of 150 participants, aimed at investigating listening habits, motivations, contexts of use, and perceived impacts of podcast consumption. The findings reveal that podcasts are primarily integrated into everyday multitasking activities and are valued for their capacity to combine entertainment, information, and informal learning. Results also suggest a strong connection between podcast listening and personal enrichment, cultural engagement, and, in some cases, educational and linguistic development. Overall, the thesis argues that the podcast represents a flexible, participatory, and culturally significant medium, capable of responding to contemporary needs for personalization, accessibility, and meaningful communication within the digital media landscape.

Abstract
This thesis explores the podcast as a contemporary communication medium, focusing on its linguistic features, listening practices, and socio-cultural impact. Framing the podcast as the heir to radio within the digital media ecosystem, the study investigates both elements of continuity and rupture between traditional broadcast media and on-demand audio formats.
