This thesis examines the complexity of underground communication within the plant kingdom, challenging the traditional paradigm of plants as purely passive and sessile organisms. Through a critical review of international scientific literature, this thesis investigates the role of the root system not merely as an organ for anchorage and nutrient uptake, but also as a center for sensory integration and communication. The primary objective is to analyze roots as the fundamental interface for environmental and social interaction through the exploration of a form of distributed, 'aneural cognition'. The inquiry develops from the theoretical framework of the root-brain hypothesis and models of extended cognition. It then proceeds with an in-depth examination of the biological mechanisms associated with root communication and subsequently analyzes the behavioral implications of these processes within social contexts. The thesis concludes that root communication does not constitute a mere physiological response to isolated stimuli, but rather represents an integrated cognitive process fundamental to ecological adaptation.
Il presente elaborato analizza la complessità della comunicazione sotterranea nel regno vegetale, mettendo in discussione la visione tradizionale delle piante come organismi puramente passivi e sessili. Attraverso una revisione critica della letteratura scientifica internazionale, la tesi indaga il ruolo dell'apparato radicale non solo come organo di ancoraggio e nutrizione, ma anche come un centro di integrazione sensoriale e comunicazione. L'obiettivo principale è analizzare le radici come interfaccia primaria di interazione ambientale e sociale attraverso l’esplorazione di una forma di "cognizione aneurale" e distribuita. Il percorso di indagine si articola partendo dal quadro teorico della root-brain hypothesis e dei modelli di cognizione estesa, per poi approfondire i meccanismi biologici associati alla comunicazione radicale e, di conseguenza, esaminare le implicazioni comportamentali di tali processi in contesti sociali. L'elaborato conclude che la comunicazione radicale non costituisce una semplice risposta fisiologica a stimoli isolati, bensì un processo cognitivo integrato e fondamentale per l'adattamento ecologico.
