Autismo al femminile: tra masking, bias di genere e identità personale

This thesis aims to explore the outcomes of late diagnosis of mild autism in adult women and the link with gender bias. Starting from the functioning of this particular disorder, the first chapter analyzes the social strategies individuals employ for adaptation and defense, masking, and the negative psychological outcomes of such behaviors, with a particular focus on women, as they appear to apply these harmful mechanisms more frequently. The second chapter focuses on the gender stereotypes that interfere with autism research. Women have some differences from the course of the same disorder in men, and stigma prevents proper identification and treatment. Lastly, the third chapter explores the consequences of late diagnosis on self-esteem and identity, including the creation of an autistic identity and the entry into a new social group.

Il presente elaborato ha l'obiettivo di approfondire gli esiti della diagnosi tardiva di autismo lieve per le donne adulte e il legame con i bias di genere. A partire dal funzionamento di questo particolare disturbo, si analizzano nel primo capitolo le strategie sociali messe in atto dagli individui per adattamento e difesa, il masking, e i conseguenti esiti psicologici negativi di tali comportamenti, con un focus particolare sui soggetti donne in quanto esse sembrerebbero applicare maggiormente questi meccanismi dannosi. Il secondo capitolo è dedicato agli stereotipi di genere che ostacolano la ricerca nel campo dell’autismo. Le donne presentano alcune differenze dall’andamento dello stesso disturbo negli uomini e lo stigma impedisce una corretta individuazione e trattamento. Infine, nel terzo capitolo si indagano le conseguenze della diagnosi tardiva sul senso di sé e sull’identità, con la formazione di un'identità autistica e l’ingresso in un nuovo gruppo di appartenenza.
