Innate and acquired have long been a dichotomy in the study of behavior, but recent studies have highlighted their interactions, leading to the idea that behavioral mechanisms may derive from a single system, integrating rigidly channeled behaviors with a predisposition to learn. The purpose of this study is to highlight how a revision of the innate-acquired concept is also necessary in the analysis of social behavior. Therefore, evidences in this regard are presented, analyzing the development of social behavior from the perspective of the interaction between genetics and environment. This analysis is conducted through the presentation, by way of example, of a study by Regolin et al., conducted at the University of Padua in 2023, which attempted to understand how sensitivity to the social role of an artificial agent in domestic chicks constitutes rigidly channeled behavior and how much it is the result of a predisposition to learn. Subsequently, studies on the development of infant social behavior will be explored, defining the concepts of imprinting, attachment, rigidly channeled behavior and predisposition to learn, empathy, intersubjectivity, and social cognition. At the end of the research, a brief comparison will be made between studies on domestic chickens and those on infants to demonstrate how the first ones can help us to understand the social behavior of mammals.
