- Personality neuroscience constitutes a field of inquiry aimed at identifying the neurobiological bases of individual differences in cognitive, emotional, and behavioural processes. The present work proposes a critical analysis of the theoretical and empirical development of the discipline. Through a bibliographic review, the principal theoretical models that have guided the field of research are examined. Particular attention is devoted to C. Robert Cloninger’s psychobiological model and Colin G. DeYoung’s Cybernetic Big Five Theory, within the context of the analysis of the principal neuroscientific evidence available in the study of personality. The analysis highlights how the discipline has been characterised by the progressive abandonment of a reductionist conception, based on the search for direct associations between individual traits and specific neuronal substrates, in favour of more integrative models, describing personality as the product of the dynamic interaction among distributed neurocognitive systems. Finally, the principal methodological criticisms characterising the field of research are discussed, including the problematic commensurability between psychological constructs and levels of neurobiological analysis, as well as certain vulnerabilities of a statistical nature. Taken as a whole, the present work emphasises the necessity of adopting more unified theoretical approaches and more rigorous empirical methodologies in order to promote the advancement of personality neuroscience.
- Le neuroscienze della personalità costituiscono un ambito di indagine volto all’individuazione delle basi neurobiologiche delle differenze individuali nei processi cognitivi, emotivi e comportamentali. Il presente elaborato propone un’analisi critica dello sviluppo teorico ed empirico della disciplina. Attraverso una revisione di tipo bibliografico, vengono esaminati i principali modelli teorici che hanno orientato il campo di ricerca. Viene dedicata particolare attenzione al modello psicobiologico di C. Robert Cloninger e alla Cybernetic Big Five Theory di Colin G. DeYoung, nel contesto dell’analisi delle principali evidenze neuroscientifiche disponibili sullo studio della personalità. L’analisi evidenzia come la disciplina si sia contraddistinta per il progressivo abbandono di una concezione riduzionista, fondata sulla ricerca di associazioni dirette tra singoli tratti e specifici substrati neuronali, in favore di modelli maggiormente integrativi, descriventi la personalità come il prodotto dell’interazione dinamica tra sistemi neurocognitivi distribuiti. Infine, vengono discusse le principali criticità metodologiche caratterizzanti il campo di ricerca, tra cui la problematica commensurabilità tra costrutti psicologici e livelli di analisi neurobiologica e alcune vulnerabilità di natura statistica. Nel suo complesso, il presente lavoro sottolinea la necessità di avvalersi di approcci teorici maggiormente unitari e metodologie empiriche più rigorose per favorire il progresso delle neuroscienze della personalità.
