The reproductive management of mares, particularly in the sporting arena, is highly influenced by their nature as seasonal polyestrous animals with a positive photoperiod. As a result, the breeding season, characterised by a continuous succession of oestrus cycles, does not begin before April, which 5 conflicts with the demands of the equine market (particularly regarding racehorses and trotters), which requires foals born in the early months of the year. To ensure that foals are born at the start of the year, attempts are made to breed mares around February–April of the previous year, a period during which, however, the mare is naturally in anestrus or in transition. This study analyses the pharmacological strategies used in clinical practice to bring forward the resumption of the oestrous cycle during the transition phase and to induce ovulation during the breeding season, with the aim of optimising the timing of artificial insemination and improving conception success rates. The study is based on the clinical observation of over one hundred mares during the transitional and breeding seasons (February–August), with a specific focus on a sample of twenty broodmares monitored in May and June to confirm the efficacy of these methods. The protocols for administering ovulationinducing agents such as HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), GnRH (gonadotropin-releasing hormone) and the use of PGFα (prostaglandins) for luteolysis were examined. Most of the mares on which the aforementioned inducers were used responded positively, allowing fertilisation with both fresh and frozen semen. The rare cases of non-response (3 out of 20) were attributed to external stress factors and reduced animal welfare (pelvic pathology, malnutrition, complicated postpartum), rather than to the ineffectiveness of the protocols. In conclusion, the study confirms that the correct and timely use of such reproductive strategies represents a safe and effective tool for the management of equine reproduction, ensuring respect for the animal’s physical and psychological well-being and the achievement of production objectives.

Abstract

The reproductive management of mares, particularly in the sporting arena, is highly influenced by their nature as seasonal polyestrous animals with a positive photoperiod. As a result, the breeding season, characterised by a continuous succession of oestrus cycles, does not begin before April, which 5 conflicts with the demands of the equine market (particularly regarding racehorses and trotters), which requires foals born in the early months of the year.
