This thesis examines the role of Neurofeedback in the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in developmental age, with the aim of evaluating its efficacy and its potential use in combination with other therapeutic approaches through a review of the existing literature. After an initial section focused on the definition of ADHD, its development and its neuropsychological profile, the neurophysiological principles underlying Neurofeedback and its main clinical applications are presented. Neurofeedback is a type of biofeedback based on teaching self-regulation of brain activity through the delivery of feedback aimed at reinforcing desired brain activity and reducing undesired activity (Marzbani et al., 2016). The efficacy of Neurofeedback has often been questioned due to the heterogeneity observed in treatment outcomes. Therefore, a comparison between neurofeedback, pharmacological treatment, and psychotherapeutic interventions is proposed in order to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of each approach within an integrated treatment perspective. Furthermore, the thesis highlights how personalized interventions may improve therapeutic efficacy by focusing on the specific characteristics of the patient that can influence treatment response. From this perspective, Neurofeedback emerges as a promising tool, especially when included within personalized and multimodal interventions.
Il presente elaborato analizza il ruolo del neurofeedback nel trattamento del Disturbo da Deficit di Attenzione e Iperattività (ADHD) in età evolutiva, con l’obiettivo di valutarne l’efficacia e il possibile utilizzo in integrazione con altri approcci terapeutici, attraverso una revisione della letteratura esistente. Dopo una prima parte dedicata alla definizione dell’ADHD, alla sua evoluzione e profilo neuropsicologico, vengono illustrati i principi neurofisiologici alla base del neurofeedback e le sue principali applicazioni cliniche. Il neurofeedback è una tipologia di biofeedback basata sull’insegnamento dell’auto-regolazione dell’attività cerebrale attraverso la restituzione di feedback per rinforzare l’attività cerebrale desiderata e ridurre quella non adattiva (Marzbani et al., 2016). L’efficacia del neurofeedback è spesso stata messa in discussione a causa dell’eterogeneità riscontrata rispetto agli effetti del trattamento. Si propone quindi un confronto tra neurofeedback, trattamento farmacologico e interventi psicoterapeutici per analizzare vantaggi e svantaggi di ciascuno in un’ottica di integrazione tra i diversi approcci; sottolineando come interventi personalizzati possano migliorare l’efficacia del trattamento, concentrandosi sulle caratteristiche specifiche della persona, che possono influenzare la risposta al trattamento. In tale prospettiva il neurofeedback si configura come uno strumento promettente, soprattutto se inserito all’interno di percorsi personalizzati e multimodali.
