Histopathological examination is one of the most important diagnostic tools in veterinary medicine, particularly in oncology, where the quality and completeness of the information provided by the clinician significantly affect diagnostic accuracy. Among the main critical issues are incomplete documentation, insufficient macroscopic lesion description, and inadequate identification of surgical margins. The aim of this work was to evaluate the potential contribution of three-dimensional (3D) scanning technologies as a support tool for the macroscopic documentation of specimens submitted for histopathological examination, with the purpose of improving communication between clinicians and pathologists and optimizing the diagnostic workflow. The study was structured into three phases: firstly, a survey was conducted to investigate the main difficulties encountered by veterinary staff when completing histopathology submission forms; secondly, two-dimensional photographs and three-dimensional scans of twelve anatomical specimens and lesions through smartphone applications, collected from both clinical and necropsy cases, were acquired; finally, a comparative evaluation of the two methods was performed by veterinary pathologists. The results highlighted several operational limitations in conventional documentation practices, confirming the need for more standardized submission forms and targeted professional training. At the same time, 3D scans showed potential advantages in improving the understanding of lesion morphology, spatial perception, and surgical margin identification, particularly in more complex specimens. Although some technical limitations emerged, mainly related to scan quality and practical workflow management, the integration of 3D technologies into histopathological documentation appears to be a promising complementary tool to traditional two-dimensional photography, opening new perspectives for a more accurate, modern, and standardized veterinary diagnostic approach.
L'esame istopatologico rappresenta uno degli strumenti diagnostici fondamentali in medicina veterinaria, in particolare in ambito oncologico, dove la qualità e la completezza delle informazioni trasmesse tra clinico e patologo influenzano in modo significativo l’accuratezza diagnostica. Tra le principali criticità emergono frequentemente una documentazione incompleta, una descrizione macroscopica insufficiente delle lesioni e una scarsa identificazione dei margini chirurgici. Il presente lavoro si propone di valutare il potenziale contributo delle tecnologie di scansione tridimensionale come supporto alla documentazione macroscopica dei campioni destinati all’esame istopatologico, con l’obiettivo di migliorare la comunicazione tra clinico e patologo e ottimizzare il processo diagnostico. La ricerca si articola in tre fasi: una prima fase di analisi delle principali difficoltà riscontrate dal personale veterinario nella compilazione delle richieste di esame istopatologico mediante questionario; una seconda fase di acquisizione di immagini bidimensionali e scansioni tridimensionali di dodici campioni anatomici e lesioni tramite l’utilizzo di applicazioni per smartphone, ottenuti da casi clinici e necroscopici; infine, una terza fase di valutazione comparativa delle due metodiche da parte di medici veterinari patologi. I risultati hanno evidenziato come la documentazione tradizionale presenti ancora diverse criticità operative, confermando la necessità di strumenti standardizzati e di maggiore formazione specifica. Comparativamente, le scansioni tridimensionali hanno mostrato un potenziale vantaggio nella comprensione della morfologia macroscopica, nella percezione spaziale delle lesioni e nell’identificazione dei margini chirurgici, soprattutto nei campioni più complessi. Sebbene siano emersi limiti tecnici legati alla qualità delle acquisizioni e alla gestione pratica della metodica, l’integrazione delle tecnologie 3D nella documentazione istopatologica appare promettente come strumento complementare alla fotografia bidimensionale, aprendo nuove prospettive per una diagnostica veterinaria più accurata, moderna e standardizzata
