The postpartum period is a particularly sensitive time for maternal psychological well-being, with potential repercussions on the mother–infant relationship and the quality of early interactions. Among the factors that can influence a mother’s psychological well-being, interoception—defined as the ability to perceive, interpret, and integrate internal bodily signals—appears to play a significant role. The present study investigated the associations between maternal interoception, postpartum anxiety and depressive symptoms, and parental reflective functioning, while also examining the possible mediating role of anxiety and depression in the relationship between interoception and maternal reflective functioning. The study included 254 mothers with infants aged 0 to 12 months (M = 5.8, SD = 3.4), who completed online self-report questionnaires assessing aspects related to interoception (MAIA), depression (BDI-II), anxiety (STAI-Y), and parental reflective functioning (PRFQ). Correlational analyses showed that greater interoceptive awareness is associated with lower levels of postpartum anxiety and depressive symptoms and with better maternal mentalization abilities. Furthermore, mediation models showed that anxiety and depression can explain, at least in part, the relationship between interoception and parental reflective function. Overall, the results suggest that interoception may represent a relevant factor for maternal mental health and the quality of parenting in the postpartum period, with possible implications for preventive interventions aimed at promoting maternal body awareness during the perinatal period.

Abstract
Overall, the results suggest that interoception may represent a relevant factor for maternal mental health and the quality of parenting in the postpartum period, with possible implications for preventive interventions aimed at promoting maternal body awareness during the perinatal period.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
