This thesis describes the analysis and experimental implementation of the SAML authentication protocol within the Exerplaza application, with the aim of evaluating its integration in a real-world application context. The project began with a study of the application architecture, source code, and the software tools on which it is based on, including the libraries and technologies used. This phase made it possible to understand the overall inner working of the application and allowed to analyse how a real-world application is structured, developed, and maintained. Subsequently, the SAML authentication protocol was analysed and studied, with particular attention to its structure, its main components, and the authentication flow it defines. This activity was followed by an analysis of the possible strategies for integrating the protocol into Exerplaza. Several technical solutions were evaluated, taking into account the characteristics of the application and its implementation constraints, leading to the selection of the approach considered most suitable. Finally, the work concluded with the implementation of a working prototype for integrating the SAML protocol into the application, with the goal of verifying its feasibility and laying the groundwork for a possible full integration into the system.
Questa tesi descrive l’analisi e l’implementazione sperimentale del protocollo di autenticazione SAML all’interno dell’applicazione Exerplaza, con l’obiettivo di valutarne l’integrazione in un contesto applicativo reale. Il progetto ha previsto una prima fase di studio dell’architettura dell’applicazione, del codice sorgente e degli strumenti software su cui essa si basa, incluse le librerie e le tecnologie utilizzate. Questa fase ha permesso di comprenderne il funzionamento generale e di analizzare come un’applicazione reale viene strutturata, sviluppata e mantenuta. Successivamente è stata condotta una fase di studio del protocollo di autenticazione SAML, con particolare attenzione alla sua struttura, ai suoi componenti principali e al flusso di autenticazione che esso definisce. A questa attività è seguita una fase di analisi delle possibili strategie di integrazione del protocollo all’interno di Exerplaza. Sono state valutate diverse soluzioni tecniche, tenendo conto delle caratteristiche dell’applicazione e dei suoi vincoli implementativi, fino alla scelta dell’approccio ritenuto più adatto. Infine, il lavoro si è concluso con l’implementazione di un prototipo funzionante per l’integrazione del protocollo SAML nell’applicazione, con l’obiettivo di verificarne la fattibilità e porre le basi per un’eventuale integrazione completa nel sistema.
