This thesis explores Italian sericultural observatories as historical evidence of the silk civilization and of the role played by sericulture in the economic, agricultural, and social development of many local areas. Established mainly between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to support the control, study, and improvement of silkworm breeding, these institutions became meeting points between scientific research, agricultural production, and manufacturing activities. The research reconstructs the historical significance of sericultural observatories by examining their connection with mulberry cultivation, silkworm egg production, the fight against silkworm diseases, and the organization of the silk supply chain. Alongside this historical perspective, the thesis focuses on the present condition of these places, many of which have lost their original function and have been converted into schools, university buildings, public facilities, private properties, or spaces with new uses. Through the analysis of bibliographic sources, archival documents, and local case studies, this work aims to enhance the value of sericultural observatories not only as scientific institutions of the past, but also as material traces of a productive and cultural memory that can still be identified within the contemporary Italian landscape.

Abstract
Through the analysis of bibliographic sources, archival documents, and local case studies, this work aims to enhance the value of sericultural observatories not only as scientific institutions of the past, but also as material traces of a productive and cultural memory that can still be identified within the contemporary Italian landscape.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
