Applying markings, indices, and color fields to architectural blocks was a widespread practice in Roman architecture, particularly between the late 1st and early 3rd centuries AD. Despite their presence in numerous monumental contexts, these features have been little studied over the years. This thesis aims to investigate, using various methods, the microstructural and mineralogical nature of the materials used for the markings inside the Mausoleum of Hadrian, in order to clarify their function and verify any reuse of previously marked blocks. To this end, multi-analytical methods were adopted, including X-ray diffraction (Micro-XRD, XRPD), optical microscopy (OM), micro-Raman spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDS). Data analysis contributes to the understanding of construction and organizational practices in Roman buildings, offering new insights into the interpretation of these functional inscriptions and their possible reuse.
Apportare segni, rubricature e campiture cromatiche sui blocchi architettonici costituiva una pratica diffusa nell’architettura romana, in particolare tra la fine del I e l’inizio del III secolo d. C. Nonostante la loro attestazione in numerosi contesti monumentali, tali evidenze sono state poco indagate negli anni. Questo lavoro di tesi si propone di ricercare attraverso vari metodi di indagine la natura microstrutturale e mineralogica dei materiali impiegati per le campiture all’interno del Mausoleo di Adriano, al fine di chiarirne la funzione e di verificare eventuali fenomeni di riutilizzo di blocchi già segnati. A tal fine, sono state adottati metodi multi-analitici tra cui la diffrazione a raggi X (Micro-XRD, XRPD), la microscopia ottica (OM), la spettroscopia micro-Raman e la microscopia elettronica a scansione (SEM-EDS). L'analisi dei dati consente di contribuire alla comprensione delle pratiche costruttive e organizzative in edilizia romana, offrendo nuovi elementi per l’interpretazione di queste scritte funzionali e del loro possibile reimpiego.
