This thesis aims to explore the active role of the professional educator in educational pathways for children with autism spectrum disorder, highlighting the central importance of the educational relationship and the progression from communicative mediation to the promotion of autonomy. Starting from a reflection on the educator’s professional identity, the study emphasises that educational practice cannot be reduced to the mere application of standardised techniques or interventions, but requires interpretative, reflective and planning skills capable of responding to the complexity of the child’s needs and the contexts in which they live. From this perspective, the educator performs a mediating function between the child, the educational environment, the family and the multidisciplinary team, contributing to the development of inclusive and personalised pathways. Particular attention is paid to communicative and relational processes, which are essential for encouraging the participation of children with autism in everyday experiences and supporting the development of their social, emotional and adaptive skills. The analysis of educational interventions for autism spectrum disorder also provides an opportunity to reflect on the importance of flexible tools and strategies to be integrated into a coherent, person-centred educational project. Finally, the thesis focuses on the educational network and the systemic-relational approach, examining the role of the family as the child’s first educational context, the function of the school as an inclusive and planning-oriented environment, and the emotional dimension of children with autism. Within this framework, autonomy and self-determination represent central aims of educational practice, as they allow the child to be considered not only in terms of their difficulties, but above all in relation to their strengths, developmental potential and individual ways of participating in social life.
