The alarming scale of childhood overweight and obesity today represents one of the major challenges for public health at a global level. This phenomenon, which has been steadily increasing in recent decades, cannot be reduced to an exclusively individual issue; rather, it requires a systemic interpretation. Such an approach must take into account the multiple factors (environmental, social, cultural, and biological) that contribute to its onset and persistence over time. In this regard, childhood assumes a particularly delicate role, as it is during the early years of life that habits, tendencies, preferences, and lifestyles are formed, all of which significantly affect long-term well-being. This work proposes an analysis of the phenomenon from a pedagogical perspective, with the aim of demonstrating how food education can be understood not only as a preventive tool, but also as a formative process that promotes awareness, autonomy, and responsibility in children. The first chapter provides an overview of the phenomenon based on the most recent epidemiological data, with a focus on the Italian context and the findings of the OKkio alla Salute surveillance system. The analysis reveals a complex picture, highlighting the need to move beyond reductionist interpretations in favor of integrated approaches. The second chapter explores the educational value of food within the broader framework of health promotion. Food is interpreted not merely as a biological need, but as a meaningful experience at relational, emotional, and cultural levels. Particular attention is given to the child’s agency and to their life contexts (school and family). Finally, the third chapter adopts a more operational perspective, offering a reflection on the role of the educator as an agent of change. Possible educational strategies and interventions aimed at children are examined, with the goal of fostering a more conscious and mature relationship with food.

Abstract
Possible educational strategies and interventions aimed at children are examined, with the goal of fostering a more conscious and mature relationship with food.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
