This paper analyzes the phenomenon of bilingualism in the context of South Tyrol, with particular attention to the school system and the differences between Italian-language and German-language schools. Following an introduction to South Tyrolean history, the paper focuses on the concept of bilingualism and the main linguistic and psycholinguistic studies related to language acquisition. It then delves into the role of schools in the development of bilingual and plurilingual skills. The paper examines the different teaching methodologies adopted in the two school systems, with particular reference to the CLIL approach and the multilingual sections present in some Italian schools, comparing them with the model of German-language schools, which is more oriented towards the preservation of the native language. The experimental part was based on the administration of two different questionnaires: one addressed to teachers and the other to students in two fourth-grade classes, belonging to an Italian-language school and a German-language school, respectively. Through analysis of the collected data, it was possible to gain a picture of the bilingual reality present in the two school contexts.
