This thesis work contextually belongs to the framework of planetary defense missions, focusing on the orbital design and simulation of an interception and rendezvous mission with the asteroid 99942 Apophis. Taking the requirements and objectives of the European Space Agency's (ESA) Ramses mission as a reference, this study aims to evaluate the dynamic feasibility and energetic requirements needed to reach the asteroid before its close flyby with the Earth scheduled for 2029. The entire mission architecture was developed and numerically validated utilizing NASA's GMAT (General Mission Analysis Tool) simulation software. The adopted methodology involved the configuration of a detailed force model and the planning of a multi-maneuver propulsive strategy. This strategy includes the hyperbolic escape phase from Earth's parking orbit, trajectory correction in deep space, and, ultimately, braking maneuvers for orbital insertion within Apophis’s Hill sphere. The simulation allowed for the determination of the key parameters of the heliocentric transfer, specifically the total time of flight and the overall energetic budget, in terms of delta-v required on board. Finally, the obtained numerical results were compared with official estimates made by the ESA. This comparison highlights the crucial importance of trajectory optimization strategies conducted by the space agency, which are fundamental to minimizing propellant consumption, containing spacecraft mass, and ensuring probe stability in the vicinity of the asteroid.

Abstract
This comparison highlights the crucial importance of trajectory optimization strategies conducted by the space agency, which are fundamental to minimizing propellant consumption, containing spacecraft mass, and ensuring probe stability in the vicinity of the asteroid.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
