The Railway as a Gothic Space in Dickens’s Dombey and Son and The Signal-Man

This thesis examines how railway modernity transforms space, time, perception, and safety, producing both progress and anxiety. In "Dombey and Son", the railway appears as an ambivalent force of destruction, transition, and social change. In "The Signal-Man", it becomes a haunted technological space marked by isolation, failed communication, and uncertainty.

Questa tesi esamina come la modernità ferroviaria trasformi lo spazio, il tempo, la percezione e la sicurezza, producendo al tempo stesso progresso e ansia. In "Dombey and Son", la ferrovia appare come una forza ambivalente di distruzione, transizione e cambiamento sociale. In "The Signal-Man", essa diventa uno spazio tecnologico infestato, segnato da isolamento, comunicazione fallita e incertezza.
