This dissertation reports on the public written discourse of some of the buildings at the University of Padua from a Linguistic Landscape perspective. The study examined four characteristics of the identified texts: which and how many languages were displayed, the physical objects on which they were observed, whether they were affixed by public institutions or governments (top-down texts) or by individual subjects (bottom-up texts), and their communicative functions. Then, the research compared these results and identified differences and similarities between the texts in the buildings of humanities and science departments. The data analysis was carried out adopting a rigid coding scheme developed from Ben-Rafael et al.’s (2006) and Cenoz and Gorter’s (2006) works. The findings revealed that most of the texts were monolingual, written in Italian only, and that the two most common physical medium were graffiti and posters. Additionally, bottom-up texts were more frequent than top-down ones, and representative speech acts were observed in more than half of the texts. When comparing the texts from the humanistic and scientific facilities, the results revealed that most of them were monolingual, written in Italian only, characterised by a representative function and that they differed only in terms of their physical medium.

Abstract
When comparing the texts from the humanistic and scientific facilities, the results revealed that most of them were monolingual, written in Italian only, characterised by a representative function and that they differed only in terms of their physical medium.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
