Post-traumatic symptoms represent a possible consequence of exposure to traumatic events and are often associated with a range of psychological difficulties, including emotion dysregulation and a reduced ability to maintain present-moment awareness. In recent years, increasing attention has also been devoted to Maladaptive Daydreaming (MD), a phenomenon characterized by immersive, persistent, and difficult-to-control fantasy activity, whose relationship with post-traumatic symptoms remains an area of ongoing research. The present study aimed to investigate the relationships among post-traumatic symptoms, Maladaptive Daydreaming, emotion dysregulation, and mindfulness in a sample of adults from the general population. A total of 208 participants completed the Post-Traumatic Symptom Questionnaire (PTSQ), the Maladaptive Daydreaming Scale-16 (MDS-16), the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS-8), and the Cognitive and Affective Mindfulness Scale–Revised (CAMS-R). Data were analyzed using correlational analyses and group comparisons based on the PTSQ clinical cut-off. The results showed that participants with clinically significant post-traumatic symptoms reported higher levels of emotion dysregulation and Maladaptive Daydreaming, as well as lower levels of mindfulness, compared with participants without clinically significant post-traumatic symptoms. These findings suggest an association between post-traumatic symptoms, emotional functioning, and Maladaptive Daydreaming, contributing to a broader understanding of the relationships among these constructs.

Abstract

Post-traumatic symptoms, maladaptive daydreaming, mindfulness, and emotion dysregulation: An analysis of their relationships
