The present study investigates the interaction between motor skills and numerical cognition in a large sample of young adults (N=84). The main objective of the study is to understand the associations between fine motor skills and numerical cognition, and to examine the relationship between these skills and the functional connectivity indices obtained using the fNIRS (functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy) technique. The experiment was divided in two phases: in the first phase, participants were required to complete standardized test batteries to assess their manual, fine motor, cognitive, and more specifically numerical skills. In the second phase, the resting-state cortical hemodynamic activity was recorded for 15 minutes using fNIRS. Basic statistical analyses were performed for each test, and subsequently, Spearman's correlation coefficients were calculated to evaluate the relationship between the participant's performance in numerical tasks and their performance in motor tasks. Then, the fNIRS data were used to compute indices of functional connectivity. Finally, these indices were correlated with the scores obtained by each participant in the neuropsychological tests. This study could reveal important connections between specific brain networks common to cognitive and motor tasks, as detected by fNIRS, and the participants' test performances.
