Animal sociality has been widely studied and provides valuable insights into the origins of social behaviour in human populations. Although many studies have primarily focused on primates and other vertebrates, the social behaviour of invertebrates remains relatively unexplored. The aim of this study was to determine how the presence of conspecifics influences environmental exploration in the species Neocaridina davidi by investigating preferred movement modalities when individuals are tested either alone or in the presence of social companions. To answer this question, the animals were divided into two experimental groups: individuals in the first group were tested alone, whereas those in the second group were tested in the presence of four conspecifics with similar physical characteristics. The study aims to identify two distinct locomotor behaviours associated with the two experimental conditions. The significance of this research lies in the possibility of gaining valuable information from phylogenetically distant organisms that may nevertheless help answer complex questions, ultimately contributing to a more ethical approach to scientific research.

Abstract

Thigmotaxis and Sociality in Neocaridina davidi: A Preliminary Investigation
