Spatial orientation is a fundamental ability, but mental representations of environments are constantly influenced by external sources. This study verifies whether suggestions from a person considered an expert in orientation can influence the memory of an environment previously learned through a map. The objectives are to analyze the relationship between participants' choices and received suggestions (comparing conditions without suggestion, with correct suggestion, and with incorrect suggestion) and to examine the role of individual differences, particularly self-reported sense of direction and the tendency to lead or be led in collaborative navigation. 165 people (18-73 years) participated, performing route retracing and pointing tasks in randomized order, followed by five questionnaires on suggestion valence, sense of direction, collaborative navigation, leadership, and demographic data. Results show that correct suggestions significantly increase accuracy compared to control, while incorrect ones decrease it. Self-reported orientation abilities do not predict accuracy in conditions with correct suggestions or without suggestions, but strongly correlate with greater accuracy in the condition with incorrect suggestions. The study highlights how spatial performance is easily influenced by external interference and that confidence in one's abilities represents a predictive factor of accuracy, allowing better resistance to incorrect suggestions in collaborative wayfinding.

Abstract
The study highlights how spatial performance is easily influenced by external interference and that confidence in one's abilities represents a predictive factor of accuracy, allowing better resistance to incorrect suggestions in collaborative wayfinding.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
