Background: Orthorexia Nervosa (ON) is defined as an excessive preoccupation with the purity and healthy quality of food, accompanied by rigid and inflexible self-imposed rules. In recent years, ON has been associated with Problematic Social Media Use (PSMU), which is conceptualized as an irrational, compulsive, and excessive use of social media to the point of interfering with aspects of daily life. Method: This thesis conducts a narrative literature review on the association between ON and PSMU. The selection of scientific articles was conducted following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines using major international academic databases (PubMed, Scopus, PsycInfo, and Google Scholar). The final review included 13 empirical studies (cross-sectional), which were synthesized and subjected to qualitative analysis. Results: All included studies report an association between Orthorexia Nervosa and PSMU, although in one case it was only indirect and in two cases limited to specific subdimensions of the constructs. Furthermore, psychological factors such as body image, obsessive-compulsive traits, emotion dysregulation, perfectionism, loneliness, eating disorders, and a generally dysfunctional relationship with food emerged as potential elements associated with the relationship between ON and PSMU. Conclusions: These findings highlight the need to further investigate the link between ON and PSMU through longitudinal studies and demonstrate how this connection may be associated with various relevant psychological factors and constructs. Consequently, the results suggest the importance of developing intervention and prevention strategies for PSMU and ON that address these underlying third factors.

Abstract
Consequently, the results suggest the importance of developing intervention and prevention strategies for PSMU and ON that address these underlying third factors.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
