The present study investigated the role of a positively valenced olfactory context (lavender aroma) in the encoding and retrieval of spatial representations learned through digital maps. Ninety-three participants took part in the study and completed a within-subjects experimental design comprising four conditions, resulting from the combination of the presence or absence of the odor during learning and recall phases. The egocentric component of spatial knowledge was assessed through a pointing task, whereas survey knowledge was assessed through a map-drawing task. The results showed no significant effects of odor on pointing performance. Conversely, a significant effect of odor presence during learning was found on map-drawing accuracy: spatial representations were more accurate when the map had been learned in the presence of the positive odor, although this advantage was attenuated when the odor was also present during recall. Overall, the findings suggest a possible selective effect of a positive olfactory context on the formation of configurational spatial representations, providing partial support for the research hypotheses.

Abstract
Overall, the findings suggest a possible selective effect of a positive olfactory context on the formation of configurational spatial representations, providing partial support for the research hypotheses.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
