This study aims to investigate the construction of family bonds in their various forms – both biological and chosen – through the films of the Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda. The theoretical framework adopted, which integrates sociological and psychoanalytical perspectives, reveals that the family is not an immutable given, but rather a relational reality constituted by shared practices, unconscious dynamics and processes of mutual recognition. It is within this theoretical framework that Kore-eda’s cinematic vision finds its place; through a sober and attentive gaze on everyday life, he questions the traditional family structures of contemporary Japanese society. By exploring alternative family configurations and the bonds underpinning them, the analysis examines two significant films in depth. In *Shoplifters* (2018), a group of individuals with no blood ties forms a family through mutual care and choice. ‘Like Father, Like Son’ (2013), on the other hand, tells the story of a mix-up of newborns at birth that forces two families to question the meaning of the parental bond. Through these two films, Kore-eda offers a profound reflection on what truly holds the family bond together.

Abstract

The construction of the family: from theoretical framework of the films of Hirokazu Kore-eda
