Abstract

Large deviation theory and self-similarity are two fundamental frameworks in statistical physics. The former describes rare fluctuations in statistical systems, while the latter captures the scale invariance underlying critical phenomena. This thesis investigates the relation between these two frameworks in the context of stochastic processes, focusing in particular on the broad class of continuous-time random walks. Through an analysis of the cumulants of the process, we identify dynamical regimes characterized by large deviations, self-similarity, and possible overlap between the two. Finally, we connect these results to anomalous diffusion and to the emergence of non-Gaussian displacement statistics.

Self-similarity and dynamical large deviations in continuous-time random walks
