A new approach to seismic monitoring and recording, known as 'distributed acoustic sensing' (DAS), has recently been proposed. This approach uses standard telecommunications fibre-optic cables to create an extremely long array of single-component seismometers (tens of kilometres). This method allows information to be obtained from seismic observations in three DAS experiments. Initial results suggest that DAS enables the recording of additional information, such as the direction of seismic wave propagation and "seismic energy". This thesis aims to compare DAS with current methodologies and related technologies in order to highlight the potential and limitations of using optical fibres for the detection of acoustic waves and seismic monitoring, with particular reference to the relevant fibre characteristics.

Abstract
A new approach to seismic monitoring and recording, known as 'distributed acoustic sensing' (DAS), has recently been proposed. This approach uses standard telecommunications fibre-optic cables to create an extremely long array of single-component seismometers (tens of kilometres). This method allows information to be obtained from seismic observations in three DAS experiments. Initial results suggest that DAS enables the recording of additional information, such as the direction of seismic wave propagation and "seismic energy". This thesis aims to compare DAS with current methodologies and related technologies in order to highlight the potential and limitations of using optical fibres for the detection of acoustic waves and seismic monitoring, with particular reference to the relevant fibre characteristics.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
