This thesis project concerns the set-up of an experiment to measure thermal and mechanical effects using a fibre-optic sensor. The operating principle is based on the effect induced on the modal distribution of light confined within an optical fibre due to external thermal and/or mechanical disturbances. The thesis focused on the optimised coupling of visible laser light into an optical fibre, characterising its numerical aperture and optical response in the absence and presence of disturbances induced by local variations in temperature and local variations in mechanical pressure, and detecting the modal distribution and its resulting changes using appropriate custom-built imaging measurement equipment. The subsequent data analysis and validation of the measurement and process protocols enabled the identification of the optimal measurement approach.
