The correct execution of milking depends on the interaction between the physiological response of the cow, the operational procedures adopted by personnel, and the functioning of the milking system. Dynamic control fits into this context because it allows the process to be assessed under real operating conditions, linking instrumental information with the observation of the milking routine and the animal’s response. This study, developed within the StallaSana project, examines the information collected by ARAV’s Milking Control Service during dynamic controls carried out on dairy farms in Veneto. The objective was to describe the main technical and operational issues related to milking and to assess the contribution of this approach in identifying conditions that may be unfavorable to udder health. The study was conducted through a retrospective and descriptive analysis of the technical reports available for the period between 31 August 2023 and 29 July 2026. The dataset included 120 dynamic controls, referring to 93 farms. The information was standardized by considering farm and milking system characteristics, milking routine, parameters measured using LactoCorder® and VaDia™, teat conditions assessed through teat score, and issues reported by the technicians. Among the available parameters, the highest frequencies of values outside the reference range concerned bimodality (87%), average milking time (81%), and overmilking (77%). By contrast, teat-end vacuum and average milk flow were outside the reference range in 3% of the available controls. Among the operational issues reported by the technicians, the most frequent were inadequate preparation of the cow, issues related to cluster removal, and working vacuum. Overall, the results show that dynamic control allows milking to be interpreted as the result of the interaction between animal, operator, and machine. Compared with the sole assessment of average parameters or static control of the milking system, this approach makes it possible to identify issues that emerge during milking. The study also highlights the usefulness of progressively standardizing the information collected by ARAV, in order to increase the comparability of controls and support, in the future, integration with indicators related to udder health.

Abstract

The correct execution of milking depends on the interaction between the physiological response of the cow, the operational procedures adopted by personnel, and the functioning of the milking system.
