Calf welfare in dairy farming represents an issue of growing ethical, scientific, and legislative relevance. Driven by EFSA opinions, the European Union is moving towards a transition to social housing systems; however, the use of individual pens during the first weeks of life remains a widespread practice in Italy. This thesis is a bibliographic study whose objective is to analyze, through a scoping review-based comparison, the impact of individual housing and its critical issues, comparing it with social systems and innovative Cow-Calf Contact (CCC) models, in order to identify the best compromise between animal welfare and farm sustainability. This study highlighted how housing in individual pens poses significant challenges related to social isolation and the severe restriction of environmental exploration opportunities. These deprivations often manifest themselves through behavioral alterations, including the onset of stereotypies and cross-sucking behavior. Conversely, social housing and CCC systems significantly improve calf socialization and health, while introducing operational challenges in health management, disease monitoring, and structural costs. In conclusion, despite requiring more complex operations, social management models and CCC emerge as the preferred solutions to combine the future animal welfare standards required by the EU with long-term farm sustainability, especially in terms of social acceptability.

Abstract

ANIMAL WELFARE IN CALF HOUSING: ANALYZING THE IMPACT OF INDIVIDUAL HOUSING VS. DIFFERENT HOUSING SYSTEMS
