To investigate this role, plants belonging to two different maize (Zea mays L.) genotypes were grown: the B73 inbred line, used as the wild type (WT), and the Zmccd8knockout mutant, characterized by the inability to synthesize strigolactones. For each genotype, 30 seedlings were grown and subsequently compared at the phenotypic, physiological and transcriptional levels. Four sampling times were carried out, during which the different root types and the shoot were weighed separately while stem length and diameter, and the distance between internodes were measured. In addition, chlorophyll, anthocyanin, flavonoid and Nitrogen Balance Index (NBI) were quantified, and the expression of genes involved in polar auxin transport and nitrate transport was analyzed by RT- qPCR. The results revealed significant phenotypic, physiological and transcriptional differences between the two genotypes, supporting the hypothesis that strigolactones play a key role in the regulation of root system development and plasticity in maize.

Abstract

Strigolactones (SLs) are plant hormones derived from β-carotene that perform important endogenous and exogenous functions, including the regulation of plant growth, symbiotic interactions with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and the germination of seeds of parasitic plants of the Orobanchaceae family in recent years, interest in these molecules has increased, as they have been shown to play a fundamental role in plant responses to abiotic stresses and in the regulation of root system development and plasticity, a process that is still only partially understood and represents the focus of the present study.
