This thesis focuses on the novella “Der Tod in Venedig” published in 1912 by the German author Thomas Mann (1875-1955), whose stylistically complex prose lends itself to a thorough analysis of the most recurrent linguistic and stylistic structures. The thesis investigates how linguistic form contributes to narrative meaning. Sound patterns, figures of speech, rhythmic alternations between hypotactic and paratactic passages and the use of the passive voice and of narrative techniques such as the "erlebte Rede" are among the features taken into consideration as contribute to determine the style of Mann’s writing. At the lexical level, the presence of obsolete forms and of epithets is assumed to characterise and reflect the protagonist's gradual decline towards death.
