The process of literacy development begins during the preschool years and is defined as “emergent literacy”. It comprises a set of skills considered to be precursors to conventional reading and writing (Cisotto et al., 2025), including phonological competence, which is the focus of this research project. Another activity that characterises preschool children is experimentation with writing. Considering these typical aspects of preschool children, this thesis aimed to investigate whether an instructional design focused on phonological competence could lead, on one hand, to an increase in the representation of phonological analogies in emergent writings and, on the other, to a transition to a higher level of conceptualisation than that observed in the initial test (Ferreiro & Teberosky, 1985). The research involved two groups of five-year-old children attending the Sant’Andrea preschool in Trissino (VI). The intervention group was presented with nine activities designed to develop phonological competence. Both groups were given an initial and a final test, consisting of writing three pairs of words characterised by a phonological analogy. Data analysis revealed an evolution of emergent writings in the intervention group, suggesting the effectiveness of teaching practices aimed at developing phonological competence. In particular, the final tests of the intervention group showed a significant improvement in the representation of phonological analogies in the proposed word pairs. The transition to a higher level of conceptualisation than that observed in the initial test was found only in a small part of the intervention group.

Abstract
The transition to a higher level of conceptualisation than that observed in the initial test was found only in a small part of the intervention group.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
