The main purpose of this work is to recognize some physical variations along the Pignola-Abriola section (Potenza, Southern Apennines), in particular geochemical perturbations, useful to the incoming definition of the GSSP for the base of the Rhaetian Stage. Through the succession, 20 samples of marly limestones and marls have been manually ground and attacked with hydrochloric acid, to isolate the organic matter for the δ13C analyses. The result of the analyses shows an enrichment in 13C, followed by an impoverishment, probably due to an unusual proliferation of microrganisms within the depositional basin and their deposition on the ocean floor in anoxic conditions, with a successive re-establishment of the normal seabed oxygenation.

Abstract
The main purpose of this work is to recognize some physical variations along the Pignola-Abriola section (Potenza, Southern Apennines), in particular geochemical perturbations, useful to the incoming definition of the GSSP for the base of the Rhaetian Stage. Through the succession, 20 samples of marly limestones and marls have been manually ground and attacked with hydrochloric acid, to isolate the organic matter for the δ13C analyses. The result of the analyses shows an enrichment in 13C, followed by an impoverishment, probably due to an unusual proliferation of microrganisms within the depositional basin and their deposition on the ocean floor in anoxic conditions, with a successive re-establishment of the normal seabed oxygenation.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
