The aim of this thesis was to learn and apply the basic methodologies of stratigraphic analysis by the use of paleontological data. These methodologies involve sampling, preparation, study of macrofossils and their distribution within a sedimentary succession represented by the Corniola Formation, of Upper Pliensbachian - Toarcian, in the Umbria-Marche Apennine. The detected succession is affected by prominent phenomena of slumping. The section has been examined from a litostratigraphic, biostratigraphic and taphonomic point of views. The classification of the sampled ammonites allowed establishing the age of the sediments and of the associated slumping event. The taphonomic analysis provided information relevant for the paleoenvironmental reconstruction
