The aim of this paper is to analyse the theme of extreme evil in the Bulgarian philosopher Tzvetan Todorov, focusing on several themes: - the moral responsibility of one's actions and, consequently, the role of conscience in borderline situations such as twentieth-century totalitarianisms; - the power of 'immoral' exemplarism, in other words the human tendency to conform to the masses in committing evil actions; - the duty of memory, to ensure that certain circumstances do not fall into oblivion but continue to serve as a warning to contemporary society.
