Equestrian rehabilitation is part of the Pet therapy. It consists of an approach in which the horse is used as a therapeutic mediator in integrated rehabilitation interventions involving the neuromotor cognitive and psycho-relational area of the person. This type of therapy is proposed to patients with disabilities or subjects in rehabilitation. Through the relationship with the horse patients develop a sense of responsability towards another living being and they strenghthen their self-esteem. Horseback riding also helps to keep the muscles moving for patients with motor difficulties, and it involves motor recovery, muscle strengthening and improved coordination and balance. In equestrian rehabilitation not every equine breed is used and not every stable is suitable for this type of therapy. There are features, morphological and behavioral, that a horse for equestrian rehabilitation must have to be considered suitable for this type of work. The horse used for the equestrian rehabilitation must have a quiet temperament and it must not be neurile. For this reason, stallions cannot be selected and females or geldings are preferred. Horses used for equestrian rehabilitation are not born for this purpose, but initially they are used for other tasks, such as sports or recreation, then at the discretion of the owner, later, they can be used as therapy horses. This step involves reconditioning the horse to adapt it to an environment and to certain situations it was not used to. For example a sports horse must be reconditioned to disable it from competitiveness and to keep it quiet. For a structure to be considered suitable for equestrian rehabilitation, it must follow the regulations and have adaquate equipment. Activities must also be coordinated by a multidisciplinary team. These are therapies that must follow a personalized path and must be assisted by competent professionals. The benefits of equestrian rehabilitation are multiple and have been officially recognized by numerous scientific evidences that have attested their validity.
