This paper considers two constructs, emotional regulation and parenting behaviors, within the diagnosis of Substance Use Disorder (SUD), a clinical condition of risk to parenting and child development. Current research highlights how these two macro topics are problematic within DUS but, despite this, there are still few studies examining the relationship between the two constructs. The goal of this research is to investigate the quality of parenting behaviors observed during mother-child interactions and their association with maternal emotional regulation within the context of parental DUS The paper is divided into 5 chapters: the first chapter deals with the two aforementioned constructs; these two macro-topics are then analyzed, in the second chapter, within the diagnosis of Substance Use Disorder. In the third chapter the study is described: the participants are presented, mothers with DUS and mothers in "low risk" conditions, recruited from the general population, the instruments, the objectives and the hypotheses of the work. More specifically, the hypotheses advanced within the research are as follows: maternal sensitivity and maternal hostility, two important variables in determining the quality of parenting, are expected to have lower scores in the group of mothers with DUS than in the group of low-risk mothers; it is also hypothesized that subjects with DUS struggled more with their impulse regulation and emotional coping strategies than low-risk subjects; finally, it is hypothesized to find within both groups the presence of significant associations between the quality of observed parenting behaviors and emotion regulation. The fourth chapter presents the results of the data analysis; the fifth presents a discussion of the data, with clinical and research implications. Limitations of the study and future perspectives are also presented.
