This dissertation aims to analyze three Verga's short stories, namely Nedda, La Lupa and Tentazione!, each of them belonging to a distinct period of the author's work. Starting with some considerations on the role and type of narrator, the emblematic protagonists of the three short stories are analyzed through their sexual desire, their body and the violence they suffer or commit. In particular, both the means of feminist criticism, that are used to identify in which way the author's sexist ideology manifests, and those of the criticism of Francesco Orlando, who theorized that literature expresses a ritorno del represso, are used. Thanks to his analysis, it is possible to understand that Verga's literature gives voice to characters who would not have a voice otherwise, and specifically to women, as is the case of La Lupa, characterized by both traditional and subversive traits, suspended between prejudice and paradoxical freedom.

Abstract
This dissertation aims to analyze three Verga's short stories, namely Nedda, La Lupa and Tentazione!, each of them belonging to a distinct period of the author's work. Starting with some considerations on the role and type of narrator, the emblematic protagonists of the three short stories are analyzed through their sexual desire, their body and the violence they suffer or commit. In particular, both the means of feminist criticism, that are used to identify in which way the author's sexist ideology manifests, and those of the criticism of Francesco Orlando, who theorized that literature expresses a ritorno del represso, are used. Thanks to his analysis, it is possible to understand that Verga's literature gives voice to characters who would not have a voice otherwise, and specifically to women, as is the case of La Lupa, characterized by both traditional and subversive traits, suspended between prejudice and paradoxical freedom.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
