Introduction Performing regular physical activity reduces the risk of all-cause mortality and the risk of various chronic diseases. College students are a population with a high prevalence of a sedentary lifestyle. Individuals in this age group who do not engage in sufficient levels of physical activity have a high risk of prolonging this attitude for the rest of their adult lives, resulting in an increased risk for adverse health outcomes. The use of new technologies such as smartphones through which to convey messages and the use of social media have been successfully used as health promotion tools in the college population. The purpose of this study is to conduct a systematic review of the studies that evaluate the effectiveness of physical activity promotion interventions in this population through the use of new technologies and to propose an intervention protocol based on the evidence from the review. Materials and methods A search was conducted on the PubMed and SCOPUS databases of studies published from 2012 and 2022 aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of physical activity promotion interventions in college students through the use of new technologies. A total of 19 articles were selected. An evidence-table was compiled. The quality of the included studies was also assessed. Results The interventions proved to be extremely heterogeneous in design, strategies implemented and outcome measures. Of the 19 studies reviewed, 15 (79%) demonstrated an improvement in physical activity levels in participants, in 3 studies (16%) no improvement was observed and in 1 study (5%) there was a worsening from baseline. Conclusions The implementation of new technology-based interventions aimed at improving physical activity levels in college students tends to be effective. There are many factors that influence the effectiveness of the study, for example, there is a gender difference in participation in these studies or better effectiveness if the intervention is accompanied by the creation of social groups.
