The four-dots masking effect is a phenomenon known in cognitive and experimental psychology as an increased difficulty in reporting the identity of a target stimulus surrounded by four dots when the latters remain visible after the disappearence of the target stimulus, compared to the cases in which the four dots disappear together with the target itself. Comparing different experimental evidences, it appears clear how the magnitude of the behavioural performance deterioration caused by this kind of masking is not always consistent among different studies. In the study presented in this thesis, I tried to replicate an evidence already present in literature (Woodman & Luck, 2003), as it appears to be one of the works in which the four-dots masking effects is more moderate, trying then to understand through a literature analysis which factors can modulate (increase as well as decrease) the masking effect.

Abstract
The four-dots masking effect is a phenomenon known in cognitive and experimental psychology as an increased difficulty in reporting the identity of a target stimulus surrounded by four dots when the latters remain visible after the disappearence of the target stimulus, compared to the cases in which the four dots disappear together with the target itself. Comparing different experimental evidences, it appears clear how the magnitude of the behavioural performance deterioration caused by this kind of masking is not always consistent among different studies. In the study presented in this thesis, I tried to replicate an evidence already present in literature (Woodman & Luck, 2003), as it appears to be one of the works in which the four-dots masking effects is more moderate, trying then to understand through a literature analysis which factors can modulate (increase as well as decrease) the masking effect.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
