To translate children’s literature is not as simple as it seems: most of the people would think that, since the target are young readers, translators do not need to be accurate or meticulous. However, this category has a dual audience, that is not only the child but also the adult that reads for them. For this reason, translators have to keep in mind both of them and should not distort the context of the text. The critics have different opinions on the topic: some thinks that translators must not change any detail and keep everything from the original book, others affirm that it is not recommended to do so because they should adapt the text taking into consideration different cultures and languages. In the first chapter of my final dissertation I intend to give a few information about some of the general techniques that translators use, not only in children’s literature. I will also show that there is not a single term to define children’s literature and then I will present the difficulty that authors and readers have on labeling the books. In the second chapter I will translate some parts taken from Sara Zarr’s “A Song Called Home”, presenting them in two columns, one with the original language, English, and the other one with the translated one, Italian. The last chapter will cover the challenges that I found myself in when translating the two chapters of the book.
