Research on intergroup contact has demonstrated its effectiveness in promoting intergroup relations. Recent evidence has shown that this strategy may also be beneficial on variables beyond the intergroup domain. In this work we present a study that aimed to investigate the effects of imagined contact on cognitive liberalisation. Participants (Italian workers) were asked to imagine a positive encounter with an unknown Arab-Muslim or an outdoor scene. We examined the effects of imagined contact on four indicators of cognitive liberalisation (e.g., actively open-minded thinking, social dominance orientation), humanisation and outgroup evaluation. We then tested a double-mediation model, in which imagined contact is associated with contact intentions through the mediation of cognitive liberalisation and outgroup evaluations. Practical implications of the findings, limitations of the study and proposals for future research are discussed.

Abstract
Practical implications of the findings, limitations of the study and proposals for future research are discussed.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
