Algae are eukaryotic organisms characterised by a high therapeutic potential; indeed, the influence of biotic and abiotic factors allows them to produce metabolites useful for treating dysfunctions and diseases. In this thesis the various classes of metabolites are discussed, in relation to the species they are mainly found inside and their properties in the medical field. Their advantages and performances have been demonstrated by the numerous analyses and researches carried out in recent years. Diabetes mellitus is a disease in constant growth in Europe and in the world; for this reason many trials are ongoing to develop innovative and more effective treatments compared to those already existing. Here, the algae are also analysed with respect to this pathology, as some of their bioactive compounds, in particular the polyphenol derivatives, have anti-diabetic properties, thanks to their inhibitory activity on specific enzymes and their ability to interfere on certain metabolic pathways. The anti-diabetic properties of algae are not the only ones these organisms have and therefore they are considered a valid possibility for the future of pharmaceuticals and modern medicine.

Abstract
The anti-diabetic properties of algae are not the only ones these organisms have and therefore they are considered a valid possibility for the future of pharmaceuticals and modern medicine.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
