The present thesis project investigated the cognitive processes that regulate the control of semantic information and in particular how these interact with domain-general executive control processes. Towards this goal, an experiment was carried out with the objective of comparing Semantic Control and Executive Control by means of two analogous versions of Task-Switching, which employ visuospatial (Executive Task-Switching) and verbal meaningful stimuli (Semantic Task-Switching) respectively. An analysis of variance and a comparison of the relative Switch-costs was then carried out, from which a link emerged between the performances in the two tasks, supporting the hypothesis that there is a link between the two types of control and that therefore there might not be a fully independent Semantic Control system.

Abstract
The present thesis project investigated the cognitive processes that regulate the control of semantic information and in particular how these interact with domain-general executive control processes. Towards this goal, an experiment was carried out with the objective of comparing Semantic Control and Executive Control by means of two analogous versions of Task-Switching, which employ visuospatial (Executive Task-Switching) and verbal meaningful stimuli (Semantic Task-Switching) respectively. An analysis of variance and a comparison of the relative Switch-costs was then carried out, from which a link emerged between the performances in the two tasks, supporting the hypothesis that there is a link between the two types of control and that therefore there might not be a fully independent Semantic Control system.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
