Attraversare il deserto. Il tema del viaggio nella scrittura di Robyn Davidson

The travel story is traditionally associated with the male figure: Odysseus travels the Mediterranean Sea, Penelope awaits him. That role division is linked to a society anchored to rigidly fixed schemes. In contemporary literature, this paradigm is beginning to be dismantled but not entirely. In the literary scenery, there are more and more travel writers embodying a new point of view that has long stayed on the fringe in a more polyphonic key, open to change. This thesis examines Robyn Davidson and her contribution to the field of women’s travel writing. The analysis focuses on her travel book called Tracks (Orme, 1980) more precisely on her choice to cross the Australian desert, completing at least 1700 miles on foot in the company of four camels and her dog and on how she experimented this trip. By gradually stripping herself from her own certainties, the young writer questions her identity closely, opening up to new experiences and learning from them, uncovering herself, beginning to know her own other I inside the Self through the confrontation with the harsh and lonely reality of the desert. With new eyes, Robyn Davidson rediscovers her own country together with herself. The experience of footprints on the sand initiates to leave its traces in the writer’s self becoming a source of knowledge, a sign of identity leading to an inevitable comparison with those of the first inhabitants of the Australian territory.

Il racconto di viaggio è tradizionalmente associato alla figura maschile: Odisseo si muove nel Mediterraneo, Penelope lo aspetta. Questa divisione dei ruoli è legata ad una società ancorata a schemi rigidamente fissi. Nella contemporaneità questo paradigma inizia a venire scardinato, ma non del tutto. Nello scenario letterario si hanno sempre più scrittrici di viaggio, portatrici di un nuovo punto di vista a lungo marginale in una chiave più polifonica, aperta al cambiamento. La tesi prende in esame Robyn Davidson e il suo contributo nel campo della scrittura di viaggio femminile. L’analisi si concentra sul suo libro di viaggio, Tracks (Orme, 1980), sulla sua scelta di come attraversare il deserto australiano, compiendo ben millesettecento miglia a piedi, in compagnia di quattro cammelli e del suo cane, e su come essa viva l’esperienza del viaggio. Spogliandosi via via delle proprie certezze, la giovane scrittrice mette in discussione la propria identità, aprendosi a nuove esperienze e ad imparare da esse, mettendosi a nudo, iniziando a conoscere il proprio ‘altro’ io dentro l’io attraverso il confronto con la dura e solitaria realtà del deserto. Con nuovi occhi Robyn Davidson riscopre il proprio paese e sé stessa. L’esperienza delle orme sulla sabbia inizia a lasciare le proprie tracce nell’io della scrittrice, divenendo fonte di conoscenza, segno di identità e confronto inevitabile con quelle dei primordiali abitanti del territorio australiano.
