Una passione inquieta: Paul Celan e Ingeborg Bachmann

This dissertation is the result of an in-depth study aimed at providing a wide-ranging overview of the lives of Paul Celan and Ingeborg Bachmann, two of the greatest German post-war poets. The paper presents a reconstruction of the biographies and the evolution of two lives that are apparently similar, sometimes extraneous and distant. Their lives cross a Europe that has just come out of the Second World War and still rejects the appalling massacre of the Jews. The same cultural movement of which both were a part, Group 47, will be accused of anti-Semitism. Celan collides with signals that testify to the persistence of anti-Semitism and Nazi ideology: he feels persecuted and misunderstood, crushed by the weight of an existence as a survivor of the horror of the total destruction of the Holocaust. They will continue to inspire each other from afar and write to each other often: Bachmann will become a precious confidant for Celan in whom to confide his malaise. Through poetry and words Celan and Bachmann were able to cope with the impossibility of a life together. When Celan puts an end to his attacks of madness by jumping into the waters of the Seine, in 1970, the pain is unbearable for Bachmann. Only three years later Bachmann died following the burns sustained in the fire caused by her cigarette. Theirs is a story lived between literature and passion, which ends tragically.

La presente tesi di laurea è il risultato di uno studio approfondito volto a fornire una panoramica ad ampio spettro delle vite di Paul Celan e Ingeborg Bachmann, due tra i più grandi poeti del secondo dopoguerra tedesco. L’elaborato presenta una ricostruzione delle biografie e dell’evoluzione di due vite che sono apparentemente simili, a volte estranee e lontane. Le loro vite attraversano un’Europa appena uscita dalla seconda guerra mondiale che ancora rifiuta lo spaventoso eccidio degli ebrei. Lo stesso movimento culturale di cui entrambi facevano parte, il Gruppo 47, sarà accusato di antisemitismo. Celan si scontra con segnali che testimoniano il perdurare dell’antisemitismo e dell’ideologia nazista: si sente perseguitato e incompreso, schiacciato dal peso di un’esistenza da sopravvissuto all’orrore della distruzione totale dell’Olocausto. Essi continueranno a ispirarsi a vicenda da lontano e a scriversi spesso: Bachmann diventerà per Celan una preziosa confidente alla quale confidare il suo malessere. Attraverso la poesia e le parole Celan e Bachmann sono stati in grado di far fronte all’impossibilità di una vita insieme. Quando Celan mette fine ai suoi attacchi di follia gettandosi nelle acque della Senna, nel 1970, per Bachmann il dolore è insostenibile. Solo tre anni più tardi Bachmann muore in seguito alle ustioni riportate nell’incendio provocato dalla sua sigaretta. La loro è una storia vissuta fra letteratura e passione, che si chiude tragicamente.
